Duterte refuses to pay Maynilad, Manila Water: Ipakain ko ang pera sa kanila!

President Rodrigo Duterte said the government will not pay Maynilad and Manila Water for the losses incurred due to the non-implementation of rate hikes.
“Pag dinemanda nila tayo diyan, hindi (ako) magbayad ng seven million. P***** i**. L**** kayo. Ipakain ko ‘yang pera sa kanila. Totoo,” said Duterte in a situation briefing in Albay on Thursday.
The President also threatened to sue the owners of two water companies and former government officials for “economic plunder.”
“Ikaw na ang magbabayad sa kita nila. Wala kang choice sa rates. Sabi ko, alam mo if you look at the law, maybe mali ako. But this is a classic case of economic plunder.
“Right at the start it was a contract that was all in contravention of the anti-graft law. Now, over a period of time that’s plunder. Kung isa, dalawa, okay lang. Isa, dalawa transaction, could not be ganun kalaki even if it is not in magnitude,” he added.
The Permanent Court of Arbitration in Singapore earlier ordered the Philippine government to indemnify Manila Water P7.39 billion for the losses it suffered from the non-implementation of water rate increases.
In 2017, the government had also been ordered by the Tribunal to pay the Manny V. Pangilinan-led Maynilad P3.4 billion for the same reason.
