Duterte says he respects, defends gays: Roommate ko nga bakla!
President Rodrigo Duterte is adamant that he loves homosexuals amid criticisms that he uses “bakla” to put down his critics, notably Senator Antonio Trillanes IV.
“Wala akong ano sa bakla ha. Kapatid ni — dalawang kapatid ni Elizabeth (Zimmerman his first wife) bakla. I do not have any qualms about (gays),” said Duterte in a speech in Davao City.
“Sa dormitoryo, ang kasama ko sa kwarto bakla. But there was always this space of respect. Wala akong ano sa mga bakla,” he added.
Duterte said that not only doe she respect gays, he was the first to defend them from bullying.
“Ako nga ang taga-depensa sa kanila sa dormitoryo eh. Eh kasi kinakaya-kaya,” he said.
In the same speech, Duterte made fun of Trillanes’ sexuality by recalling how his waiter declared the Madalo leader as gay. He tried to soften his jokes by claiming that he used to be gay himself.
“Huwag kayong — do not be offended. We accept all genders nowadays. Sinong bakla dito? ‘Yang prangka lang. Ako, bakla man ako noon,” he said.
