President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday said he understands why the senators sought the revocation of his executive order (EO) lowering taxes on imported pork.
His economic managers, however, believe that EO 128, which reduces the tariff rate on pork imports, can benefit the public, Duterte said during his televised address.
“I can understand where the senators come from. There is also the domestic supply which they intend to protect and they are vehement about it,” the Chief Executive also said.
“Problem is, ‘yung mga managers ko, mga Finance… I’d like to mention (Agriculture) Secretary (William) Dar, NEDA, and, maybe, (Finance Secretary) Sonny Dominguez are in really in favor,” he added.
Duterte said the EO is just a “temporary measure” to lower pork prices in Metro Manila, and once supply stabilizes, he can always withdraw it.
“Kung medyo malakas na yung domestic market and there is movement, madali lang naman eh, we can always withdraw the EO that I signed,” according to him.
“It’s just a temporary measure, really, to bring down the prices. But, the senators see a different light,” he said.
The Senate earlier adopted a joint resolution asking Duterte to revoke EO 128, saying that the Order will kill the local hog industry, not the African swine fever.
