President Rodrigo Duterte is leaving it up to Congress to choose whom to support in the speakership.

In a media interview on Monday, Duterte clarified that he was only endorsing a term-sharing agreement between Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano and Rep. Lord Allan Velasco as House Speaker in the 18th Congress.

“That is their privilege actually. We are just trying to end up the impasse. Nobody was sure to vote for whom and they kept on asking sino yung kandidato ni President. So i shied away. If you can resolve the matter comfortable between you do it,” said the President.

“I hate to intrude, but apparently considering what happened in the last few days and malapit na ang session, sabi ko na my statement would really be it’s time for me to talk,” he added.

Talking to newly appointed officials in Malacanang, Duterte suggested that Cayetano will sit as the Speaker in the first 15 months and Velasco will take over for the remaining 21 months.
