President Rodrigo Duterte is scheduled to sign into law the P4.1 trillion national budget for 2020 today, January 6.
The signing will be held at Rizal Hall in Malacañang at 4 p.m., a Palace advisory said.
In his September 17, 2019 letter to Senate President Vicente Sotto III and House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano, Duterte asked Congress to pass the proposed 2020 national budget immediately.
“In order to address the need to maintain continuous government operations following the end of the current fiscal year (FY), to expedite the funding of various programs, projects, and the activities for FY 2020, and to ensure budgetary preparedness that will enable the government to effectively perform its Constitutional mandate,” his letter read.
Congress submitted the spending bill to Malacañang on December 20, 2019.
It can be recalled that the national government was forced to operate on a reenacted 2018 budget from January to mid-April 2019 due to alleged pork barrel insertions.
