Duterte signs law increasing alcohol, cigarette taxes

President Rodrigo Duterte has signed a law increasing taxes on alcohol and electronic cigarettes.
This was confirmed by Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo on Thursday.
Malacañang has yet to release a copy of the newly signed law.
In November last year, Duterte certified the measure as urgent, saying higher sin taxes would “address the urgent need to generate additional revenue to support the effective implementation of the Universal Health Care (UHC) Act and to further protect the right to health of the people.”
The Department of Finance estimated that the new taxes would generate P47.9 billion for the UHC program in 2020.
