President Rodrigo Duterte has signed a law requiring educational institutions to provide neutral desks to all students.

Republic Act (RA) 11394 or the Mandatory Provision of Neutral Desks in Educational Institutions Act, signed by Duterte last August 22, aims to address the special needs of left-handed students.

“The State shall require educational institutions to provide appropriate armchairs to address the needs of the left-handed student population,” the new law read.

“It shall be obligatory for all educational institutions, both public and private, that make sure of armchairs in the classroom to provide neutral desks to all students,” it further said.

RA 11394 mandates schools to have neutral desks for 10 percent of the student population within a year from the effectivity of this Act.
