President Rodrigo Duterte welcomed the launching of the 5000-Piso Lapulapu Commemorative Banknote and Silver Commemorative Medal held at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Main Complex in Manila on Monday.

In a taped message, Duterte expressed delight over the inclusion of images of a young Lapu-Lapu, the Mactan warriors, the majestic view of Mt. Apo, and the great Philippine eagle in the said commemorative items.

“Indeed, if we are to apply to truly celebrate our rich history as a nation, we need to elevate Lapu-Lapu to a greater standing among the pantheon of Filipino heroes,” the Chief Executive said.

“We therefore dedicate this bank note and this medal to his historical victory in Mactan 500 years ago,” he added.

Duterte likewise urged Filipinos to take inspiration from Lapu-Lapu’s heroism amid the challenges facing the country.
