President Rodrigo Duterte advised House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco and former Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano to work together to ensure the timely passage of the proposed P4.5-trillion national budget for 2021.
Duterte met with Velasco and Cayetano in Malacañang early Tuesday, a day after 186 lawmakers elected the former to assume the highest post in the House of Representatives.
“All is well. Parang tatay si Tatay Digong kinausap mga anak niya. Pinag payuhan na magkaisa. One majority and pass the budget para sa sambayanang Pilipino,” Senator Christopher Go, a former aide to the President, told reporters.
Meanwhile, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said both Cayetano and Velasco also committed to pass other priority legislation of the Duterte administration.
In a virtual presser earlier in the day, Roque congratulated Velasco on his election as House speaker. The President, he added, was “very optimistic” that the 2021 budget will be passed on time now that the speakership row had been settled.
