Duterte to Canada: Return garbage on or before May 15
By Prince Golez
President Rodrigo Duterte has given Canada until May 15 to take back its garbage that has been illegally dumped to the Philippines several years ago.
“The President gave May 15 as a deadline. If they cannot get that, then we will be shipping them out and throw them to the shores or beach of Canada,” said Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo in a media briefing Tuesday.
“From what I gather, kukunin daw nila kasi may nag report daw don e,” Panelo added.
Asked why it took Canada years to take action on its waste, the chief presidential legal counsel said: “Wala namang sinasbi Si Seceratry Locsin kahapon.”
The Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources earlier said the Canadian government is committed to shoulder all the expenses to ship out all its 69 waste containers.
On April 23, Duterte threatened to “declare war” on Canada if it does not remove its garbage from the country.
“Awayin natin ang Canada. We’ll declare war against them, kaya man natin sila. Isauli ko talaga ah tingnan mo,” the Chief Executive had said.
