Duterte to Prietos on Dunkin’ Donuts tax cheating: I’m not vindictive but I will make you pay!
President Rodrigo Duterte vowed to make the Prieto family pay for tax evasion charges filed against its subsidary which holds the local franchise for Dunkin’ Donuts.
In a speech in Ilolio City, Duterte said: “One of these days — hindi ko hayaan ‘yan. Not because I’m vindictive. No, it’s not that. Matter of… Kailangan ko talaga habulin ‘yan. Magbayad kayo. Hindi man pwede basta-basta na lang na tayo magkamali lang — ‘yan ang ayaw ko.”
Duterte claimed that the Prietos, who run the Inquirer, used their media business as “leverage” during the previous administration.
“Yung doughnut owes government four billion, walang bayad, bayad ‘yan. Inquirer eh. Prieto eh. Kaya may leverage siya. Kaya sabi ko nga, kaya ako galit, mga putang ina kayo, when you criticize us is it talagang galing — we are from outer space, mga demonyo. ‘Yung editorial ninyo,” said Duterte.
“Sabi ko, kayong mga mayaman, kayo ‘yung mga number one nasa graft and corruption. Doughnut, ‘yung doughnut na pagkain, you owe government four billion. Panahon ni (Bureau of Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim) Henares, ang binayad ninyo eight million lang,” he added.
Last Ferbuary, the BIR filed tax evasion complaint against the Prietos’ Golden Donuts Ic. for cheating the government of P1 billion in income and value added taxes in 2007 from its Dunkin’ Donuts franchise network. Golden Donuts has denied the claim saying it has settled all its tax liabilities as of 2012.
Duterte has already made good his vow to kick out the Prietos from the Mile Long property in Makati which they have leased at rock bottom rates since the Marcos administration.
In August 2017, the Makati Regional Trial Court ordered Sunvar Realty Development Corp. (owned by the Prieto and Rufino family) and other tenants to vacate the Mile Long property. Sunvar was aslo ordered to pay the government back rentals amounting to P478,200,600.
