President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the purchase of one million polymerase chain reaction (PCR) virus tests and two million rapid antibody test kits as the government braces for the influx of over 200,000 jobless Filipinos from abroad.
This was revealed by Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., chief implementer of the National Plan Against COVID-19, as the government ramps up its testing in preparation for the easing of the lockdown.
Galvez said the government has to conduct tests on roughly 180,000 probable carriers of coronavirus immediately starting April 21 or nine days before the end of the enhance community quarantine.
He said one carrier can infect up to 10 people based on their contact tracing.
He thanks the Philippine Red Cross for setting up a facility that could conduct 10,0000 tests per day (suspected carriers need multiple testing) and complement the government’s limited testing centers .
He aid the government would also need the test kits for the 50,000 seafarers an 150,000 other OFWs who have lost their jobs and were coming back home from infected countries.
