Duterte unlikely to issue EO to improve PH internet service

President Rodrigo Duterte is unlikely to sign an executive order (EO) that will allow internet service providers to build their own network using satellite technology for Internet connectivity, Malacañang said.
The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry had earlier urged Duterte to sign an EO on Satellite Access Liberalization to improve the country’s internet speed and accessibility.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the proposed EO may infringe on Congress’ power to grant franchises.
“Kinakailangan po nang mas malawakang pag-aaral diyan dahil alam naman natin ang paggamit ng ere ay subject to the grant of a franchise issued by Congress,” Roque said in a recent virtual presser.
“So, sa tingin ko po parang malabo pong magawa ng Presidente iyan through an Executive Order because he will be possibly infringing on the powers of Congress but we need to study the matter in more details,” he added.
