The bible of Philippine politics

Duterte’s advice to VMs on running against mayors: ‘Patayin mo. Kung wala ka pera, ipa-target mo na lang!’

President Rodrigo Duterte has a tongue in cheek advice to vice mayors who he believed would most likely run against their incumbent mayors in the 2016 elections.

In a speech during the 25th annual convention of the Vice Mayors’ League of the Philippines, Duterte said: “Patayin mo.Bakit mo padaanan sa gastos, may pera ka?”

“Kung limitado ka lang ‘yung pera mo may .22 rifle ka eh di ipa-target mo na lang,” said Duterte to a roar of laughter and approval from the audience

Duterte first entered into politics as vice mayor of Davao City under the revolutionary government of then President Cory Aquino in 1986.He won as mayor in 1988 and ruled the city with an iron fist for nearly three decades.

Duterte said it was inevitable for vice mayors to go for the top post because there was no way to go but up in politics.

“I’m addressing to you like mayors kasi wala man kayong pupuntahan next election. Magtakbo man talaga kayo ng mayor. Sigurado ‘yan,” he said.

“Almost three-fourths. Siguro 8 out of 10. Lalo na kung kontra partido mo ang putang inang mayor na ‘yan,” he added.
