Duterte’s next choice? Guevarra nominated to SC
Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra has been nominated before the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) to become a justice of the Supreme Court (SC).
“I believe that he possesses the necessary credentials, professional experience and the motivation to discharge the duties as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court,” read the November 20 endorsement letter of retired Sandiganbayan justice and former chief presidential legal counsel Raoul Victorino
“I have known Secretary Guevarra to be a person of proven competence, integrity, probity, and independence and his sense of patriotism through his socio-civic engagements,” Vitorino told the JBC.
The JBC is currently accepting applications for a seat at the SC which was vacated by Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta.
Victorino informed the JBC that Guevarra was a second honor graduate of the Ateneo College of Law and placed second in the 1985 bar examination.
Prior becoming justice secretary, Victorino said Guevarra served as Malacanang’s deputy executive secretary for legal affairs (DESLA).
“As DESLA, he reviewed all legal matters under the Office of the President including appeals from certain quasi judicial agency of the government, investigation and resolution of administrative and disciplinary cases involving presidential appointees and high ranking officials and all executive issuances and presidential actions on matter or government administration,” he explained
“He also served as Office of the President Oversight Representative of Executive Secretary in various National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Cabinet level committee. He was also an arbitrator of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry and a member of the Philippine Legal Team in arbitration case concerning the West Philippine Sea at the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague,” he added.
