Empleyado lang, ‘di boss! Angara won’t inhibit from ABS-CBN franchise hearing despite wife’s ties to network
Senator Sonny Angara on Monday (May 18) said he will not inhibit from deliberations on ABS-CBN’s franchise application even if his wife works for the network.
In a statement, Angara said he sees no reason to recuse himself since his wife, Tootsy, is not an official of ABS-CBN.
“Looking at our laws on the matter there is no need for me to inhibit because I do not have a substantial interest in the company which the law and rules define as shares sufficient to elect a director. Neither I nor my wife is an officer of the company , she is a regular employee, thus there is no conflict of interest as set forth in our laws,” he said.
Lawyer Larry Gadon sought the inhibition of Angara and eight other senators due to their alleged ties to ABS-CBN, which he said would cloud their judgment regarding the network’s franchise bid.
Aside from Angara, the senators whom Gadon asked to inhibit were Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III, Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto, and Senators Kiko Pangilinan, Manny Pacquiao, Lito Lapid, Grace Poe, Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., and Pia Cayetano.
