Erice’s proposal “self-serving.” – Romualdez

On Saturday, Bloc leader Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez of Leyte rejected  Erice’s bill giving President Aquino another six-year term “to ensure continuity of reforms” implemented under his administration. Opposition lawmakers want no hand in any move to tinker with the constitutional term limit provision involving elective officials including the president of the republic.  MST

I don’t think the people will support the idea,” said Romualdez,  also president of Philippine Constitution Association. Should the President support call for his second term, it means he disregarded his own principle because of the desire to stay in power,” Romualdez added.  MST

Even House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte  Jr. does not subscribe to  Erice’s idea. &ldquo I don’t think P-Noy (Aquino) will allow it. The people would not accept that.  Besides it is not the style of P-Noy,” Belmonte said. Belmonte assured the public that the House will not pass a proposed law that will be anti-people.”  MST

But Erice said he would push for his proposal for Aquino’s second term all the way, especially if the people wanted him to continue the Matuwid na Daan” advocacy of his administration. If my constituents will support me, I will file a bill in congress to amend the Constitution to allow President Aquino to seek a second term.  But if my constituents say otherwise, I will not pursue it,” Erice said on Saturday.
