Exempted no more! Politikos happy and proud with UP’s first UAAP finals stint


At long last!

Several senators have joined a jubilant University of the Philippines community amid historic news that Fighting Maroons will play in the first UAAP basketball finals in three decades.

The UP Fighting Maroons defeated Adamson University Wednesday night to advance to the title series of the UAAP Season 81 men’s basketball tournament.

Senators Nancy Binay, Loren Legarda, Grace Poe, Francis Escudero and Richard Gordon were among the UP alumni who sent congratulatory messages to the UP Fighting Maroons via social media.

“Congratulations UP Fighting Maroons! #AtinTo #UPFight #DiNaExemptedSaFinals,” Binay tweeted.

Poe is also looking fowrward to the “Battle of Katipunan” as UP battles Ateneo for the UAAP basketball championship. “Finally, a finals appearance! Congrats UP! #UPFight #AtinTwo #BattleOfKatipunan,” she tweeted.

Escudero rememberd that he was a college freshman 32 years ago when UP last joined the UAAP basketball finals. “Congrats to the UP Fighting Maroons!!!! Kudos to the Adamson team as well as both teams gave it their all!!! Certainly one of the best basketball games I have ever watched,” he tweeted.

Legarda also hailed the “sweet victory” of the UP Fighting Marroons. “Congratulations UP Fighting Maroons! We are going to the Finals #UPFight #SweetVictory #AtinTwo,” she tweeted.

Gordon said he was “so happy and proud for UP.”

“After more than 30 years of drought, they made a strong comeback. Indeed persistence and hardwork pays off. Ngayon lang ata natuwa ang lahat na may finals. On Saturday it will be a battle between my two alma maters— #BattleofKatipunan . #UAAPSeason81,” he tweeted.
