Expect heavy traffic at SM Sta. Mesa with closure of intersection for Skyway project

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Tuesday announced the closure of the Gregorio Araneta Avenue – Aurora Boulevard intersection in Manila starting Thursday (Aug. 15) for seven consecutive nights.

Emilio Llavor, Project Development Officer V of the MMDA’s Road Safety Unit, said the intersection beside SM Santa Mesa will be completely closed to traffic from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

“Magkakaroon ng (There will be a) closure for seven consecutive nights, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., yung Araneta saka(the Araneta and) Aurora Boulevard intersection to install or launch the girders ng Skyway Stage 3,” Llavor said during a press conference at the MMDA office in Makati City.

About 17,000 to 18,000 vehicles are expected to be affected by the closure, according to the MMDA data.

Light vehicles are advised to take the following routes during the scheduled closure:

From Shaw Boulevard/V. Mapa, go straight towards Magsaysay Blvd. then Santol St., turn right at Palanza, Landargun or Bayani Road, left at G. Araneta to destination;

From Cubao towards Manila area, along Aurora Blvd., turn right at Guirayan St., left at Palanza, left at Tomas Arguelles St. or Santol St. to Magsaysay Blvd. to destination;

From N. Domingo and Blumentritt, take F. Roman, H. Lozada St. and J. Ruiz St.;

From north: along C-3 Sgt. Rivera, turn right at Bayani, Landargun and Palanza St., turn left at Santol St., left at Magsaysay Blvd., and take V. Mapa, Old Sta. Mesa to destination.

Meanwhile, trucks and other heavy vehicles are advised to take the following routes:

From Quezon Avenue, E. Rodriguez Ave., go straight towards España Blvd., turn left at Lacson Ave. and go straight towards Nagtahan to destination and vice versa; or

Take Magsaysay Blvd., turn right at V. Mapa to Shaw Blvd. to destination and vice versa.

Following the seven-night closure of the intersection, the roads surrounding the area may be partially closed for the construction of the Skyway Stage 3.

The Skyway Stage 3 is one of the key projects under the “Build, Build, Build” program of the Duterte administration which will connect the South Luzon Expressway in Buendia to the North Luzon Expressway in Balintawak.

By the end of the year, majority of the project will be complete and is seen to reduce travel time from one end of the Skyway to the other to about 15 to 20 minutes from the current two hours.
