Facebook bets on rockstar doctor to do a ‘Duterte’ in 2019
Facebook has taken an interest in the candidacy of a doctor who’s running for senator because of his popularity online.
Politiko learned that people from Facebook have gotten in touch with Dr. Willie Ong to discuss how he can possibly boost his candidacy using social media.
The online giant believes Ong has the potential to win as senator given his bast social media following. His Facebook page has over 8.9 million fans, while his videos— featuring healthcare tips and medical advice— quickly rack up hundreds of thousands of views hours after being uploaded online.
Facebook believes Ong could convert his online following to votes, similar to how then-Davao mayor Rodrigo Duterte utilized his popularity on social media to win the 2016 presidential race.
Encouraged by the role it played in the previous national elections, Facebook also hopes to give traditional media a run for their money by being an alternative platform for candidates to court voters.
Will Ong succeed like Duterte with Facebook’s help? Abangan ang susunod na kabanata!
