May basbas ni Duterte: Trillanes explains why Panelo wasn’t fired like Faeldon
The firing of Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Nicanor Faeldon this week showed who’s the “untouchable” official in the Duterte administration— and it’s not the former Marine, ex-senator Antonio Trillanes IV said Thursday (September 5).
In an exclusive interview with the tabloid Abante, Trillanes described Faeldon’s firing as paryt of “damage control” in the wake of the controversy caused by the early release of several convicts of heinous crimes due to the Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) Law.
“Si Faeldon, kaya lang naman sinibak ‘yun sabog na sabog na. Nagkabistuhan so parang damage control na kailangang tanggalin. Pero si Panelo, nakita mo inarbor kaagad sa press con,” he said.
Panelo was dragged into the controversy over the GCTA Law after he was found to have referred the application for executive clemency of convicted rapist and murderer Antonio Sanchez to the Board of Pardons and Parole (BPP).
President Rodrigo Duterte, however, said in a press conference there was nothing wrong with Panelo’s action since referring requests is part of a lawyer’s job.
Duterte fired Faeldon for failing to follow instructions with regard to processing convicts’ release due to the GCTA law.
For Trillanes, Panelo’s referral showed his push for Sanchez’s release had Duterte’s blessing.
“Para sa akin, si Panelo gumalaw ‘yan kasi may basbas ‘yan ni Duterte. Kaya malalaman mo kung kasabwat ‘yung boss pagka ina-arbor ‘yung tao,” he said.
Panelo has thanked Duterte for defending him amid the controversy.
