President Rodrigo Duterte is pushing for Charter change to prevent the military from attempting a coup against his government, his spokesman said.
Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo was reacting to Duterte’s statement urging his allies in the House of Representatives to speed up the process of amending the Constitution.
“Ang premise noon, under the Constitution the AFP is the protector of the people. Alam na ng military iyon, so nagre-react sila doon, bakit ganyan,” said Panelo.
“In other words, I think it’s a fair warning to all na baka pag nagalit iyan, biglang mag-coup iyang mga iyan.
Panelo pointed out that military coups usually lead to a forced change in leadership.
“Di ba sabi niya, ‘you better amend the Constitution habang nandito pa ako’. You must remember that the history has shown us that when the Armed Forces of the Philippines rise and supported by the people, eh nababago, nagkakaroon ng leadership change,” the chief presidential legal counsel said.
