Fake news ‘yan! DND chief: No truth Andal would lead backchannel talks with communists
By Prince Golez
President Rodrigo Duterte did not order former Philippine Coconut Authority chief Avelino Andal to lead the backdoor talks with Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) founding chairman Jose Maria Sison.
This was Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana’s reaction to reports that Andal had been tasked by Duterte last week to negotiate with the communist rebels.
“Latest info on Billy Andal’s claim that he was tapped by (Duterte) to conduct back-channeling with the CPP/ New People’s Army. It is fake news,” Lorenzana told reporters on Tuesday.
“The President says he never ordered him to do so,” he added.
In a media briefing early today, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo also denied Andal’s claim.
“Well, he’s not involved in the negotiation process. Members of the panel would be Secretary Bello, he’s one of them,” Panelo said.
Andal is currently a member of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board.
