AN administration lawmaker on Friday backed the House Minority’s intention to urge the Sandiganbayan to grant house arrest for 91-year-old “pork barrel” scam respondent, Senate Minority Leader Juan Ponce Enrile.
This after the plunder-charged Enrile was rushed to Makati Medical Center at 3 a.m. Thursday due to a case of pneumonia. He was transferred there from the PNP General Hospital in Quezon City.
“No person who is 91 years of age should be held in detention. More so, in the case of [Enrile] who is only under detention pending trial of a non-bailable offense. He still enjoys presumption of innocence,” said Ilocos Norte Rep. Rodolfo Fariñas.
Enrile is under hospital arrest for allegedly pocketing P172 million worth of kickbacks under the Janet Lim Napoles-hatched Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) scam.
PNP doctors decided to transfer him to the better equipped Makati hospital for fear that his condition might worsen.
On Friday, Minority Leader Ronaldo Zamora of San Juan and senior member Rep. Rodolfo Albano III of Isabela emailed to reporters a copy of a resolution “pleading for the mercy and compassion of the Sandiganbayan to grant house arrest” to the ailing senator instead.
They said the measure would be filed on Monday, March 2.
“Yes I support it for humanitarian reasons,” Fariñas said of the resolution, adding that Enrile cannot be considered a flight risk because of his advanced age. (Randy K. Ortega)
