Fed to the dogs: Duterte didn’t lift a finger to ensure confirmation of Gina Lopez, Yasay

President Rodrigo Duterte may have sung praises for former Secretaries Gina Lopez and Perfecto Yasay Jr. for their hard work in the Cabinet, but he never made efforts to ensure their confirmation by the Commission on Appointments.

Politiko has learned that Duterte never called up Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III, who chairs the CA, or any members of the powerful body to lobby for the confirmation of Lopez and Yasay.

As politikos and long time political pundits know, confirmation by the CA entails getting into the good graces of its members more than an objective assessment of an official’s qualifications.

A phone call from Duterte would have gone a long way in increasing the chances of Lopez and Yasay being confirmed even though they both faced a rough sailing before the CA.

Voting 18-6, the CA on Wednesday (May 4) voted to reject Lopez’s appointment as Environment Secretary. Her confirmation faced stiff opposition from mining advocates and companies affected by her crackdown on the industry.

Yasay also failed to get the CA’s nod over the controversy surrounding his previous acquisition of American citizenship.
