Deputy Speaker Dan Fernandez on Monday slammed allies of Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco for engaging in “double-talk and disinformation” in claiming they have the numbers to oust House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano.
He issued the statement after Buhay party-list Rep. Lito Atienza and Oriental Mindoro Rep. Salvador Leachon on Sunday said Velasco can win the speakership vote because he has more or less 160 supporters from the party-list bloc, PDP-Laban, and the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC).
But Fernandez said the number does not add up because Velasco’s allies did not consider those from party-lists and PDP-Laban blocs who have said they support Cayetano’s continued leadership.
As an example, he pointed to Anakalusugan party-list Rep. Mike Defensor and Deputy Speaker and Sagip party-list Rep. Dante Marcoleta as among those from party-lists bloc who support Cayetano, but are still being counted as voting for Velasco.
“Even Senior Citizens party-list Rep. Francisco Datol, who died last month, is included in the total number being quoted by Leachon and Atienza,” Fernandez said.
“Konting respeto lang naman sana. Huwag na nila isama ang mga namatay na sa bilang nila,” he said.
He also noted that Deputy Speakers Johnny Pimentel and Dong Gonzales, who were previously allied with Velasco, are now supporting Cayetano, having both signed the manifesto of support for the Speaker and voted reject his resignation.
Fernandez said it is this kind of “double-talk and disinformation” that “makes it hard for the members of Congress to trust Congressman Velasco.”
“Alam naman natin kung ano ang kakambal ng sinungaling di ba,” he said.
Fernandez said Atienza’s bad grasp of numbers makes it “easy to understand how Congressman Velasco and his allies are having a hard time understanding the budget process.”
“Eh kung sa simple one plus one pa lang nahihirapan na sila,” he said.
