Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman has welcomed the decision of the House leadership to finally begin panel discussions over the pending 11 franchise bills of broadcast giant ABS-CBN.
Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano earlier announced the House committee on legislative franchise will start formal hearing next week in connection over the franchise renewal of of the Lopez-owned station amid the impending expiration of its franchise.
“On behalf of the numerous advocates for press freedom in the House of Representatives, I truly appreciate the decision… to start on March 10, 2020 the consideration of the 11 bills proposing the extension for another 25 years of the legislative franchise of ABS-CBN,” he said.
The panel discussions, according to Lagman, “will advance the belated timetable” previously announced by the House leadership “which would unduly delay the consideration and approval of the imperiled franchise.”
Lagman hopes that the hearings on the franchise of ABS-CBN will not be extended past the 2022 presidential and general elections as previously intimated by Cayetano.
