A fitting gift for Earth Day! Legarda: Paris Agreement to come into force in PH on April 22
The observance of Earth Day on Saturday (April 22) will be historic for the Philippines as it will coincide with the Paris agreement officially taking effect in the country on the said day, Sen. Loren Legarda announced Friday (April 21).
“As Party to the Agreement, we can influence the decisions on how the accord will be implemented and we maintain our leadership role in the international climate talks and advocacy,” she said.
“Even if we are a nation vulnerable to climate change impacts, we can show the world that we are capable of action, that we will use our vulnerability as our motivation towards sustainability,” Legarda said.
The chair of the Senate committee on climate change made the announcement as she accepted her Luntiang Kapwa Award, a recognition for her role in steering the Senate’s concurrence to the Paris Agreement.
The road towards the ratification of the Agreement was not easy, she said, but the journey ensuring its implementation is now the greater challenge.
Under the Paris Agreement, developed nations are asked to “decarbonize” economy-wide. They must raise $100 billion yearly to help vulnerable nations for mitigation and adaptation and to transfer technology.
The Philippines, being one of the most vulnerable nations to the impacts of climate change, will have access to the funds that will help the country adapt to the impacts of climate change.
