At least 14 local government units (LGUs) in areas under general community quarantine (GCQ) have expressed willingness to accept commercial domestic flights from other GCQ zones.

Transport Assistant Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the country’s main gateway is now prepared to “go back to business” and “serve their patrons” after the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) allowed the resumption of commercial domestic flights.

“Mayroon na tayong 14 na lokal na pamahalaan na handa na rin sila na tanggapin ang mga domestic flights galing ho sa iba’t ibang lugar, GCQ to GCQ,” he said in an interview over state-run Radyo Pilipinas.

Lopez, however, did not mention which LGUs are ready to accept commercial domestic flights.

Commercial domestic flights from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) resumed last June 5.

Transport Secretary Arthur Tugade earlier said LGUs must categorically support the resumption of domestic commercial operations in its jurisdiction.

Metro Manila, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon including cities of Cebu and Mandaue, Calabarzon, Pangasinan, Albay, and Davao City are currently under GCQ since Monday. The rest of the country is under MGCQ.

Regular commercial air travel has been suspended in areas under the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) and the modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ). No areas are now under ECQ and MECQ.

Lopez acknowledged that many Filipinos had fears over traveling due to the threat of catching or spreading Covid-19.

“Ngayon nga po may mga agam-agam ang ating mga kababayan para bumiyahe. Sa tingin ho natin, aabot pa ito sa mga last quarter of this year,” he said.

He expressed hope that the country’s transport sector would be able to recover by the fourth quarter of the year.

“Hopefully by the last quarter of this year baka unti-unti na ho silang makabangon sa tulong ho ng gobyerno,” he said. (PNA)
