Gesture of goodwill: Duterte appoints Misuari as special economic envoy to int’l Islamic org
President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) founder Nur Misuari as Special Economic Envoy on Islamic Affairs to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in a bid to court the support of Islamic countries for peace talks in Mindanao.
During the first meeting of the government-MNLF Peace Coordinating Committee Friday (December 14), Duterte told Misuari that he hopes the new post will allow the latter “to foster further lasting relationships with the leaders of the Islamic countries.”
Only Misuari could “command the respect and trust” of the OIC, the President added.
“Most of the leaders of the OIC are friends of Nur,” Duterte said. “I do not think that there is another Moro personality that could command the respect and trust of the OIC but only you. You are the only one who can bring the case to the OIC and get the results.”
Misuari is expected to attend the annual meeting of the Parliamentary Union of OIC Member States in Burkina Faso in Western Africa in January 2020.
