Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Jay Velasco has slammed House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano for using the P4.5-trillion national budget for 2021 to extend his stay in power.
In a six-minute video posted Friday (October 2), Velasco pointed to the 2021 national budget as the reason why Cayetano doesn’t want to step down on October 14, the date they agreed upon for the turnover of the speakership when they met with President Rodrigo Duterte earlier this week.
“To hang on to the speakership and extend his term until December on the pretext of budget deliberations only raises suspicions,” he said.
Velasco said several lawmakers have been disgruntled in recent weeks over the supposed unfair share of allocations for district projects. The purported favoritism for Cayetano’s allies, he said, is one of the main reasons for the leadership squabble in the House.
“Ang mga tanong po kay Speaker Cayetano at sa kanyang barkada: budget ba ito para sa bayan or budget ng mga barkada mo?” he asked.
“Is this why Speaker Cayetano is trying to blackmail President Duterte and hold the budget hostage if his term is not extended?” Velasco added.
The Marinduque lawmaker told Cayetano to resign on October 14 after passing the 2021 national budget.
October 14 is the last session day of the House before it goes on a month-long break.
“Speaker Cayetano, you gave your word in front of the President to honor the term-sharing agreement. Please I appeal to you: Finish the budget and resign on October 14,” Velasco said.
