GMA News lays off workers as shows get axed
Several employees of GMA Network got the shock of their lives Wednesday (September 9) after they were informed that the management was letting them go.
Citing information from a source, the tabloid Abante reported that those laid off were contractual employees working on shows airing on GMA News TV. They are under a project employment contract, which means their work is good as long as a show is on air.
Abante’s source said the cancellation of shows such as “State of the Nation,” “Balitanghali” “News TV Live” and “QRT” was the reason why GMA laid off workers.
Meanwhile, a source told Politiko that the lay off was made in compliance with labor laws, as the project employees have been on floating status for six months.
“Production for shows have not yet returned to normal due to the pandemic. It will be malpractice to keep the employees on floating status for more than six months, since their employment is tied to the shows they’re handling,” the source said.
GMA Network has yet to release a statement on the lay off.
