Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano showed he’s still on good terms with Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte, barely a week after the presidential son sparked rumors of a coup in the House of Representatives by threatening to declare the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speakers vacant.
Cayetano flew with his wife, Taguig Rep. Lani Cayetano, to Davao City to meet with Duterte. ACT-CIS party-list Rep. Eric Yap, a close friend of the presidential son, posted a photo of their meeting on Instagram Saturday (September 26). The caption read: “Chillax night.”
Earlier this month, a Viber message of Duterte to select lawmakers made the rounds online. It read: “Sinabihan ko na kayo nananahimik lang ako kasi di na ako kinakausap nina speaker ngauon nadamay ako. I will ask the mindanao bloc to declare the seat of the speaker and Deputy speakers vacant ngayon Monday di mamatay ang mindanao dahil walang budget!”
Duterte later issued a statement clarifying that his message was an expression of his “personal dismay” over the complaints of some lawmakers on the proposed 2021 national budget.
Cayetano, meanwhile, has accused Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Jay Velasco of staging a coup attempt against him.
Velasco is Cayetano’s presumptive successor under the “15-21” term sharing agreement brokered by President Rodrigo Duterte.
