Why Gokongwei makes sense for Duterte as DOF choice

Presumptive president Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is reportedly tapping his Cebuano roots in filling up the position of Department of Finance (DOF) secretary.

Gaining inside track on the post is Lance Gokongwei, scion of the wealthy John Gokongwei who built his fortune in Cebu.

The younger Gokongwei is now calling the shots in the Visayan-sprung business empire, which has interests in telecommunications, financial services, petrochemicals, power generation, aviation, and livestock farming.

Manila Bulletin reported via source Sunday (May 15) that the colorful “Digong” was looking at Lance to be his Finance alter-ego.

But what exactly is Duterte’s connection to the Queen City of the South? A lot, considering that the Davao mayor is actually Cebuano.

The PDP-Laban bet’s late father, former Davao Governor Vicente Duterte, was mayor of Danao City in Cebu.

The president-in-waiting maintains ties to the city as he is reported to own a small property there. Word is that if he didn’t run for president, Duterte, now 71, would’ve retired in back home in Danao.

Digong first became Davao chief executive in 1988.
