Good news! Senate to grant extra P10M for free wi-fi in SUCs

At least 112 state universities and colleges (SUCs) have received a “double treat” from senators after being given additional P10 million each for their capital outlay for 2018 as well as promised them “free wi-fi” in their campuses.

The Senate Committee on Finance, chaired by Sen. Loren Legarda, has approved the 2018 proposed budget of the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) and SUCs amounting to P12.4 billion.

Legarda, in a budget hearing last Thursday, told CHEd and SUCs officials, who packed the session hall where the budget hearing was conducted, that the panel will find ways to fund free Internet access in all SUCs.

“We will provide free WiFi for all SUCs. We will find a budget for that,” she said. The government will need about P5 million for each SUC to fund free WiFi connection.
