Vice President Leni Robredo joined the outpour of tributes and condolences following the death of former Senate President Edgardo Angara, calling him a great loss to the country.
“Nakikiramay tayo sa Pamilya Angara. Kawalan ito hindi lang ng kanilang pamilya, kundi kawalan ng buong bansa,” she told reporters in Naga City on Monday (May 14, 2018).
Robredo noted that the older Angara rendered “true public service” through the many positions he had held in his years as a politician and educator.
“Alam natin iyong kasaysayan ni Sen. Angara sa public service, napakatagal na panahong naglingkod sa ating bayan… Maraming posisyon na pinanghawakan, at iyong mga posisyong pinanghawakan, naglingkod na totoo,” she added.
The former Senate President passed away on Sunday due to an apparent heart attack. He was 83.
Aside from several terms as senator, the late public servant also sat as Secretary of Agriculture, president of the University of the Philippines, and was appointed Special Envoy to the European Union a year before he passed away.
