Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra has advised new Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Gerald Bantag to keep his eyes fixed on the goal.
Bantag paid a courtesy call on Guevarra Wednesday morning.
“I told him to focus on three major objectives, in the order of urgency: 1. clean up the GCTA mess; 2. full computerization; and 3. stop illegal drug trade inside,” said Guevarra.
Malacañang announced Tuesday that President Rodrigo Duterte designated Bantag, the regional director of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Mimaropa, as the corrections chief.
Duterte defended his appointment of Bantag, who is facing multiple homicide charges after an explosion occured inside Parañaque City Jail that killed 10 inmates in 2016, saying the former jail warden is considered innocent unless proven guilty. “Since there is no conviction yet, in obedience to the rule of presumption of innocence I gave him a new job.”
