Guevarra leaves Locsin, Lorenzana to figure out effects of ending VFA
Its up to the Department of National Defense (DND) and Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) may have to conduct a study on the effects of the termination of the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) between the United States and the Philippines, said Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Saturday (Jan. 25).
Guevarra pointed this out after the Department of Justice (DOJ) was directed by Malacanang to study the legal procedure on the termination of the VFA.
“The DOJ will deal only on the legal way to terminate the VFA,” he said.
The Secretary said that the DOJ is already done with its study and will submit it to Malacanang.
“Termination by either party is provided for in the VFA itself,” he said.
“Possible effects on the MDT (Mutual Defense Treaty) and EDCA (Enhanced Defence Cooperation Agreement) may have to be studied separately by the DND and DFA, but the DOJ will be ready to assist,” he assured.
