Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Tuesday (Nov. 24) expressed his sadness over the death of Senior Assistant State Prosecutor Juan Pedro Navera.
“So very sad. He was one of our best,” he said.
Guevarra said “SASP Navera passed away last night due to pancreatic cancer.”
Navera was the one who was able to get the conviction of retired Army Gen. Jovito Palparan for the 2006 disappearance of two female University of the Philippines (UP) students.
He was also led the prosecution in convicting illegal drug traders in a number of cases including the 2019 conviction of Mexican Sinaloa drug cartel member Horacio Hernandez Herrera.
Among the drug cases he handled, Navera was the chair of the panel of prosecutors which reversed the dismissal of the illegal drugs complaint against alleged drug lord Peter Lim and his co-respondents which resulted in court indictments.
