Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra has ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to investigate the riot at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City that led to the deaths of nine persons deprived of liberty (PDLs)

In an order he issued on Friday (Oct. 9), Guevarra directed the NBI “to conduct an investigation on the tumultous affray, which resulted in the death of at least nine PDLs (persons deprived of liberty), that transpired in Quadrant 4 of the NBP-East, Maximum Security Compound, NBP Reservation, Muntinlupa City on 09 October 2020 and, if evidence warrants, to file the appropriate charges against all persons involved and found responsible for any unlawful act in connection therewith.”

“Further, OIC Distor (NBI Director Eric Distor) is hereby directed to submit an initial report to the Office of the Secretary on the status of the implementation of this Order within ten days from notice,” he added.

The BuCor said that the riot took place inside Quadrant 4 of the Maximum Security Compound which resulted in the deaths of nine inmates and the injury of seven others.

It said the riot was caused by the fight between Sigue Sigue Sputnik (SSS) and Sigue Sigue Commando (SSC) gangs.
