Hanep sa kunat! Cynthia Villar plays deaf to senators’ call to fix Senate assistance center
Senator Cynthia Villar can’t be bothered to spend money for renovating the Senate Public Assistance Center (PAC) even if she’s the wife of one of the richest men in the Philippines.
Villar played deaf to her colleagues’ call to renovate the PAC during the plenary session Wednesday (August 28).
The issue of PAC’s renovation surfaced after Senator Panfilo Lacson aired his concern over Senator Bong Go’s remark that the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) headed by Secretary Mark Villar will pay for the repairs. Mark is Villar’s son.
“My issue is not on the Malasakit Center. My concern is about the renovation or construction to be implemented by DPWH on the Public Assistance Center, which is a facility of the Senate,” Lacson said.
The senator said the Senate may violate the Constitution if it allows DPWH to fund the PAC’s renovation since the Supreme Court already barred the cross-border alignment of funds.
Lacson suggested that the Senate use its savings for PAC’s renovation but Senate President Tito Sotto interjected.
“Unless Senator Villar is willing to spend her own money to put it up,” Sotto said.
“That’s most welcome Mr. President,” Lacson replied.
Villar, however, kept mum and even smirked at her colleagues.
Sotto also ribbed Senator Sherwin Gatchalian about funding the PAC’s renovation but he didn’t say anything about the proposal.
PAC serves as the receiving area for documents of people needing medical assistance from senators. The center also endorses cash strapped patients to senators who could help them.
Villar remains the richest senator, with a net worth of P3.7 billion as of December 2018.
