The hashtags #UPWalkout and #DefendUP trended on Twitter Monday (August 20) as students staged a walkout to defend academic freedom amid a proposal to allow police and military to enter universities.

The hashtag ranked #UPWalkout fifth among the Philippine trends on Twitter while #DefendUP was number six.

It was UP Student Regent Isaac Punzalan who declared Tuesday as “UP Day of Walkout and Action.”

In a memorandum dated August 14, Punzalan said allowing the police and military to enter universities and colleges will put students’ academic freedom at risk.

“The proposed entry and intervention of the police and the military in state universities, including UP, is expected to result in massive surveillance and monitoring on our students, faculty and officials, especially those who are vocally critical,” he said.

University officials, including UP Diliman Chancellor Michael Tan, UP Cebu’s Liza Corro and other college deans have endorsed the walkout.
