Help the farmers now! Duterte suspends rice imports
By Prince Golez
President Duterte has ordered the suspension of rice importation to protect the country’s farmers.
In an interview with GMA News, Duterte urged the government to purchase local rice to help the farmers recover from income losses due to the Rice Tariffication Law.
On February 14, 2019, the President signed Republic Act 11203 lifting import limits on rice, allowing more competitors to enter the rice market and providing affordable rice prices for consumers.
The law, however, has been seriously affecting the livelihoods of local farmers.
The average farm gate price of palay continues to decline at P15.35 per kilogram as of October 25, the lowest palay price in eight years, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority.
