The stand of Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio against the presence of Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea will not be a factor in President Rodrigo Duterte’s appointment of the new Chief Justice.
Carpio has again been nominated for Chief Justice, his fourth nomination to the top judicial post.
“It doesn’t matter to him. What is important is he is highly qualified for the delicate job of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court,” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo told reporters on Thursday.
Panelo also noted that the discretion to appoint the Chief Justice and Associate Justices of the Supreme Court lies with the President.
Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin Lucas Bersamin is set to retire in October.
