It used to be that crowds had to wait for minutes or even hours to hear President Rodrigo Duterte speak when he arrives at an event late.
But on Friday (May 19), it was Duterte’s turn to wait as Ramon Ang, the bilyonaryo who funded the Biyaya ng Pagbabago housing project in Davao City, showed up at its groundbreaking ceremony behind schedule due to traffic.
The President told the crowd to be patient and wait for Ang, whom he said he wanted to pick up but failed to contact.
“We have to be patient just a little while. Ang ating pinaka sponsor, Ramon Ang, ang gagastos nito, natraffic. I could not… hindi ko malaman kung nasaan. Sabi ko, sunduin ko siya banda pero I could not get in touch with him. Hintay-hintayin na lang natin,” he said.
Despite Ang’s tardiness, Duterte praised the head honcho of San Miguel Corporation for his generosity.
“It will just be a little while. Sandali man lang siguro‘yun. He was good enough to… This is what you get if you do not accept money. They will offer something else and that else is itong project na ito,” he said.
Less than 10 minutes after Duterte spoke, Ang arrived and apologized to the President for being late.
“Sorry, sorry boss! Na-traffic kami!” he said.
