Hontiveros’ Christmas wish: De Lima’s freedom in 2020
Senator Risa Hontiveros is hoping that fellow opposition colleague – Senator Leila de Lima – will no longer spend Christmas in jail in 2020.
Hontiveros on Wednesday shared De Lima’s Christmas wish not to spend the yuletide season in detention next year.
The senator from Bicol was detained in February 2017 at the Philippine National Police (PNP) Custodial Center on drug charges.
On Christmas Day, De Lima said, “I hope that this is my last Christmas in detention so that my normal life as a mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and as a duly-elected senator be now restored.”
In reaction to De Lima’s aspiration, Hontiveros, on Twitter said, “One of my Xmas (Christmas) wishes.”
“I’m raring to work fully and assiduously as a fiscalizing minority senator and focus on my chairmanship of the Senate Committee on Social Justice, Welfare and Rural Development,” De Lima said in a statement.
“I wish that more and more patriotic men and women and pro-democracy forces join the ranks of those persistently working for a return of a just, humane and decent Philippine society,” she said.
De Lima added, “Despite the struggles Filipinos continue to endure under an anti-human rights government, I hope that we can all remain optimistic that better days are coming if we choose to fight for what is right.”
