Senator Risa Hontiveros has vowed to continue the fight just as the late veteran journalist Twink Macaraig boldly did.

Hontiveros paid tribute to Macaraig, former news anchor of TV5 and ANC, saying she was brilliant, funny, fierce and kind.

“Twink Macaraig! 😢 @twinkmac St Scho Mla high school Forensics Club mate & Pres. Brilliant, funny, fierce & kind,” she tweeted.

“Will never forget your column, ‘Why I fight.’ For those & similar reasons, we will continue to fight. Love & peace, Twink ✊🏼💜🙏🏼,” she said.

Macaraig passed away recently after years of battling cancer. She also served as Filipino bureau chief of Channel News Asia.

In an article titled “Why I fight” published in the Philippine Star on March 24, 2019, Macaraig made comparisons between her cancer illness and President Duterte’s administration.

“I look at this world I’m struggling to stay in and feel only despair. The despot Filipinos elected to the presidency has infected the populace with a malignance unmatched by the deadliest of cancers,” she wrote.

“While the very heart of me — that chamber that stores my conscience and conviction, love and dreams, memory and self-respect — remains unbreached, I will fight,” she said.
