House approves declaration of May 18 as ‘National Higher Education Day’
The House of Representatives unanimously approved on third and final reading House Bill 4851, which declares every May 18th of the year as the “National Higher Education Day.”
The approval was done during Wednesday’s session wherein all 167 House Members present voted in favor of said bill, principally authored by Baguio City Rep. Mark Go, chair of the House committee on higher and technical education.
The bill provides that in commemoration of the founding anniversary of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), May 18 of every year shall be declared as “National Higher Education Day.”
The declaration is in recognition of the “immense contribution of higher education to poverty alleviation and national development, especially in developing human resources, bridging the gap between the skills set of the Filipino workforce and the demands of the employers, creating jobs, and facilitating inclusive growth and sustainable development.”
The bill mandates CHED to be the lead agency in charge of the preparation and implementation of an annual program of activities and advocacy campaign for the observance of National Higher Education Day.
All higher education institutions shall provide full support and assistance to the preparation of the annual program of activities and events to be conducted by the CHED.
