ISABELA Rep. Rodito Albano III is seeking a congressional inquiry on what he described as the Land Transportation Office’s (LTO) multi-bllion peso racket involving the forced purchase of its new-fangled car plates.
“The mandatory purchase of new car plates by the LTO is a monumental attempt to again rip off million of helpless car, truck, motorcycle owners in the country whose car plates are still usable or serviceable,” the Minority solon said.
According to Albano, these multitude of motorists particularly those with still serviceable old plates on their registered vehicles shouldn’t be made to buy the costly and purportedly useless new plates being churned out by Power Plates Development Concepts Inc and J. Knieriem BV Goes (JKG).
The politiko branded Power Plates and JKG as the “favored” suppliers of the LTO, which he chastised for failing to prove the technical superiority of the new car plates in relation to the use of reflective sheets that had been a necessary feature of old car plates.
“The reflective sheets are vital to car plate manufacturing and use because of the visibility requirements for car plates especially at night.
“The initial findings on the specifications of the new car plates being forced on helpless motorists by the LTO revealed failure to use the proper reflective sheets of acceptable standard and quality,” Albano claimed.
“The LTO and its favored supplier have a lot of explaining to do as far as the technical aspects of the new car plates are concerned because it would expose the inferior quality of the car plates and its overpricing,” Albano said.
The solon likewise slammed the LTO for boasting about the new “security features” of the car plates when what it was referring to all along were just two metal bolts that permanently secure the new car plates to ostensibly prevent theft.
Albano said this feature’s purpose is to simply rake in more profit in case a motorist would need replacement plates.
“This is the most ridiculous argument because any vehicle involved in a minor accident, or whose car plates have to be removed for necessary repairs will be forced to buy another set of plate from LTO’s partner in crime, JKG,” he pointed out. (Randy K. Ortega)
