House Majority Floor Leader Martin Romualdez has assured Malacañang that Congress will “give the highest priority” the request of President Rodrigo Duterte to expedite the approval of a P30–billion supplemental budget for the government’s relief and rehabilitation efforts in areas affected by Taal Volcano explosion.
“We assure that the House of Representatives would give the highest priority to the request of President Duterte for Congress to fast-track the approval of a P30 billion supplemental budget for areas affected by the Taal Volcano eruption,” said Romualdez.
Romualdez stressed that the House leadership “is even willing to increase the amount of the supplemental budget to as much as P50 billion” for the sake of residents who were displaced by the Taal’s seismic activities.
We are going to coordinate with the Palace to get the full details of the supplemental budget.
House Deputy Speaker Vilma Santos-Recto and five other lawmakers from Batangas on Monday filed a proposed legislation that seeks to create a rehabilitation and development commission to assist those who were displaced by the eruption of Taal Volcano.
Santos-Recto said House Bill No. 5966 aims to “strengthen mechanisms of government to address the needs of families and communities affected by the eruption of Taal.”
A P50-billion allotment is infused in the proposed measure “to provide immediate relief to affected individuals and families and to establish resettlement centers, homesites and townsites for displaced families.
The bill also allows Congress to increase its allotment through a supplemental budget or through annual general appropriations.
